Attica, Athens, Greece 🇬🇷 – 2

Last fall, I wrote about my adventures in Athens, Greece. As stated previously, I had gone hesitantly, begrudgingly. I wasn’t too excited, and I wasn’t expecting much from the trip. Then, I landed. Then, I explored.

I extended my original one week into three weeks; I turned one trip into three trips. I completely fell in love. I loved the city, the landscape, the monuments, the museums, the food, the people, and–of course–the coffee.

Now, there are a number of places I went to once and found simply wonderful. I want to go back. I want to go back and try some more, for my own benefit and to be more confident in my recommendations and commentary here. There are also quite a number of places I went two, three, and more times that I think are fabulous, but I am not listing here–it would be too much.

So, this is not an exhaustive list, and it is not the usual detailed single recommendation. Rather, this time around, I am doing my favorite 3–and “favorite 3”, this phrasing is intentional. I was impressed by lots, there are definitely more than 3 to love; however, I am recommending these 3 for their coffee, and three separate, unique reasons that made them stand out among the rest.

In no special order:

Little Tree Books & Coffee

I enjoy wandering while I travel; I will go to the big monuments and the expected places, and then I will explore beyond and around the neighborhood. I discovered Little Tree Books & Coffee on such an exploration. Just beyond the Acropolis, perhaps a 10-minute walk from all the hustle and bustle of the promenade of restaurants, vendors, and music, is this cute, quiet, and amazing cafe.

The coffee was delightful, the lemon tart was outstanding, the smoothie was tasty and filling. On top of all of this, the customer service was great, the ambiance was calming, and as a book lover I could spend days here. And this is the reason for recommending it: it’s not just the coffee or the rest of the menu, it’s the overall experience, particularly for the book lover looking for a little bit of calm, or the next good read . . .

La Pizzetta

A pizzeria? Okay — hear me out: as part of a trip package, I had breakfast at La Pizzetta during my first week. The breakfast was impeccable — coffee, water, a host of breads and pastries. I never had their Italian goodies, so I can’t speak on them–what I did have though, and what I am speaking on, was amazing.

The Greek coffee (always metrois) was divine; seriously, it still stands out as some of the best Greek coffee I had throughout all my trips and days in Athens. The upstairs seating area is quiet, closed off, and cozy. The internet is strong and the workers are remarkably kind.

During my last trip, I spent every afternoon of my first week, upstairs with a coffee and chocolate croissant twist. It was the perfect combination to wind-down from all the walking, and the perfect combination to perk me up for the rest of my day. In fact, it became a daily ritual because my friend loved it too–she was with me for the first week, and she had selected it as our rendezvous point. She fell in love with it, for its coffee and its ambiance–she utilized it as a work space (the time difference meant her days started in our late afternoon/early evening). I know it sounds a bit odd, but their freshly made breads, pastries, and Greek coffee are top-notch.

Folk. Restaurant

Less than a couple of minutes from La Pizzetta is Folk.

I never had a savory meal here. I did have their Greek coffee, a few pastries, and a bit of breakfast–and all of it was simply marvelous.

During my first trip, I spent one afternoon working here–I was in between accommodations and wanted a clean, delicious, caffeinated spot to stay, and Folk. really delivered. I came back over the course of that stay, and my next two trips.

Folk. has tabletop/bar-seating right in front of the windows; this makes for outstanding people-watching as the area can get quite busy. It is on a corner, a lively pedestrian intersection, with outdoor seating, and, at times, there are even musicians outside–stationary and walking by. The servers were always kind. The menu had quite the mix and variety of options. And, of course, the Greek coffee hit the spot.

And there you have it: my three favorite caffeinated spots in Athens.

Each had a welcoming and warm vibe created through their own ambient charm, tasty treats, and stellar people at the helm. Each had amazing coffee. Each made me want to come back–and since I can’t go back at the moment, or any time soon, I hope you are inspired to find a way to get to them . . . and please make sure to report back when you do!

Best of the Best: State Edition

In 2016 Huffington Post published: The Best Places For Coffee In Every State . . . and Washington D.C.

I found this article as I was starting my coffee journey in 2018. At the time I was living in Las Vegas, Nevada and I was absolutely thrilled to know my home state’s best coffee house (Sunrise Coffee) was actually one of my favorite places! For nearly 10 years, I had been patronizing the best of the best in Nevada. Every time I go back to Vegas I make a stop still — I miss it terribly, and I miss its companion locale Mothership just as much!

Now, I left Las Vegas and went on a variety of travel adventures after my departure.

During my travel adventures, I was blessed and lucky enough to go on two separate road trips through the US 🇺🇸. One traveling east and north, another traveling south and west. At some point during my travels I looked at every state I would travel through, the cities and routes available, and decided I should try and see if I can get to the best coffee in other states!

I traversed 13 states in some fashion and in some way during my two road trips. The thing is: the west and midwestern states are pretty large. So, I didn’t get close to 13 coffee shops, but I did see a few and I have to say it has inspired me further.

In Minneapolis, Minnesota–on two separate occasions, a year or so apart, I went to Peace Coffee. The ambiance was incredible. The coffee was strong and aromatic. Their peanut butter cookies were a perfect companion to my coffee.

In Oklahoma City, Oklahoma I visited Elemental Coffee Roasters — and I loved it so much I got some coffee for later! It was in a great location in the city, it had a wonderful layout, and it had just plain good coffee.

In Albuquerque, New Mexico I made a quick stop at one of the several locations of Satellite Coffee. I happen to patron the one next to the university; I loved the ambiance and wanted to stay but I had lots to see and only a bit of time–though I must say my coffee gave me all the joy and energy I needed for my adventures.

So I got to 3 out of 13 states I visited/drove through — technically 4 since I went through Nevada and went back to Sunrise. Still though, not a passing grade.

But sometimes the grade isn’t the end all be all!

I had a great time; I had something specific and different to do when I was driving and traveling, unlike most other to-do lists, and I enjoyed so much I hope to keep going. Travel and have the best coffee in the good ol’ USA 🇺🇸, what could be better? 😉🤗

Chino, CA, USA: The Flinderstreet Cafe

As previously mentioned, it has been *some* time since I have been able to recommend a local coffee shop.

While any discovery could have been the first–in a while–I had to consider who should go first, and why?

With that in mind, I bring you: The Flinderstreet Cafe.

The Flinderstreet Cafe has been my home-hub for years now. I am able to completely and confidently state that if you are ever in or around this part of southern California, you have to make a stop.

It’s hidden in a shopping center–you gotta go all the way to the back. The shopping center is relatively empty so the space is quiet. Due to the shopping center being so empty, and the cafe being in the back, it is easily missed. Truly, a hidden gem; truly, when discovered, a treasure.

There is indoor and outdoor seating. The Wifi is good; there are plenty of plugs. It’s an ideal date spot and an ideal work space–as well as a great coffee spot, of course!

My absolute favorite drink is the: Honey Vanilla Latte. I have had many versions since, and nothing compares to the one at Flinderstreet Cafe. What to pair with my coffee? Often their cookies–they have a bag of minis, always, next to the cashier. Chocolate chip or snickerdoodle, either way you can’t go wrong.

I have also tried their sandwiches, pastries, and a few other drinks–coffee and non-coffee alike. Everything has been good to great. I think the cakes and cookies are my overall favorite though, but I do have a sweet tooth!

I have met friends here. I have taken my mom here. I have met with work associates here. Every time it was this wonderful secret I got to share; in fact, every visitor was surprised and asked, or did, come back on their own–what a testament to the food, drink, and atmosphere provided.

For the first recommendation, in oh so long, I have chosen The Flinderstreet Cafe because it is an outstanding coffeehouse. It has excellent seating, lighting, customer service, food, and coffee–if you’re ever in Chino, California, USA, be sure to make a stop; you will not be disappointed.

Coffee — and a slide

Drink your coffee. Go down the slide.

New Ground coffee is opening shop in London — and the shop features a giant slide. Yes, like the kind in a playground.

I have never tasted their coffee, but I would be willing to say that the ambiance, at the very least, would be a whole lot of fun. And, as if the slide and laughter of those sliding down aren’t enough, New Ground is invested in decreasing recidivism and supporting the community at large. They train and hire ex-offenders to work for them. They give people a second chance–and any organization that believes in people, that allows them to re-enter the world with work and a chance to start over positively, that’s the kind of organization I want to promote and support. Next time I’m in London, I know what coffee I’ll be sipping first.

Seattle, Washington, USA: Starbucks Reserve

I have made it!

As mentioned in Global Locations, there are just six Starbucks Reserves in the world. I had the chance, unplanned originally and a happy opportunity seized, to visit a Starbucks Reserve in Milan–the first Starbucks to touch Italy. It was a magical experience on multiple levels and it generated quite the conversation once I shared my post, photos, and my delight.

Once I discovered there were more Reserves, in already desired travel destinations at that, I made a goal of visiting more–eventually. That eventuality was more than a goal written on paper, it is now a goal that is being checked off!

In late October 2019, I was visiting a friend in Seattle and made sure our itinerary included a stop at the very first Reserve in Seattle.

Just like Milan, it was a golden treasure trove of all things caffeinated, of all things delicious.

With that . . . just four more to go!

August 30, 2019: Quote of the Day

“If you’re a new artist, practice your art and share it. Set up shop somewhere, whether it’s a street corner or a coffee shop. I got my start in a coffee shop that didn’t even have live music. I wanted to play in coffee shops that did have live music, but I didn’t have an audience.”

–Jason Mraz

Global Locations: Starbucks Reserve

  • Milan, Italy
  • New York City, USA
  • Seattle, USA
  • Shanghai, China
  • Tokyo, Japan
  • . . . in the works: Chicago, USA

Some time ago I wrote about the merits of the Starbucks Reserve in Milan, Lombardy, Italy. I received some feedback on the piece–mostly pertaining to other locations. As a result, I decided to look up other Reserves.

I knew that Reserves were rare, but I did not realize how rare these Reserve Roastery locations actually are–just 5 currently operating in the whole world!

Some people have to visit the 7 Wonders of the World, some people want to visit every baseball stadium in the USA, some people want to touch every continent. I support any and all travel goals. I support multiple travel goals–so I’m offering another one: visit every Starbucks Reserve Roastery in the world, and if they add a few more, that’s just a few more places to explore and a few more cities to visit!

Who’s with me? Where to next? ✈️🧳

Kona, Hawaii, USA: Daylight Mind Coffee Company

Daylight Mind Coffee Company–two locations:

  • Kailua-Kona
  • Waikoloa

Let me state flatly and unequivocally: Kailua-Kona is better.

If you can only go to one location in Kona, I vote Kailua-Kona.

Why? The Kailua-Kona location rests right on the beach. The added smells, sounds, and feels of the ocean waves crashing makes everything about Daylight better. The Waikoloa location is in Queens Marketplace, a nice shopping center but nothing magical–it’s not the ocean.

The menu is the same. I had better service in Kailua-Kona each time. I had quality internet in both locations. Kailua-Kona was a larger venue with more seating, and thus more varied types of seating.

Kailua-Kona is also next to a farmers market, the former royal summer residence, plenty of tourists shops, and quite a few hotels. It just feels more accessible, and I feel there is more to do and experience as a visitor in this part of town.

I had breakfast, iced coffee, house coffee, and coffee to-go at the Kailua-Kona location. I ordered coffee and seated myself. I went to the restaurant to experience the service and food. I stayed for approximately 15 minutes on one visit, on another visit I stayed for a couple of hours. I went weekdays and weekends, mornings and afternoons. I visited on multiple occasions and each time I was thoroughly impressed by every bit of this place.

At the Wakioloa location, I went just twice–once for breakfast and once just for coffee.

At either Daylight, the coffee was good, not my favorite in all of Kailua-Kona, but I still loved it, specifically the Kailua-Kona venue, for everything it paired and added to the coffee experience. So, this is an unusual recommendation, as I’m recommending it not based on having the best coffee per se, but rather on the feeling and ambiance created while drinking your coffee.

So, if you’re in Kona, try Daylight, try both locations, it’s good for coffee, breakfast, and maybe a little downtime before you go shopping, or back to the beach.

Hawaiian Life

Over the past year and a half writing Cups and Comments I have learned that it is best to sit down, write a bunch for the future, edit in another session, and then relax as your weeks worth of posts are delivered. I prepared for some time to work, and thought it would be easy to follow this pattern as I stayed in Hawaii.

Well, I have to admit, I must confess: Hawaiian living is just too good. I am thoroughly behind and distracted here, but with a view and atmosphere like this, can you blame me?

LRG-DSC04686

I’m doing my best to get back into my groove, but every time I sit down I just want to look up and soak it all in . . . writing, researching, pretty much anything other than sipping my coffee as I enjoy the sounds, smells, and sun here is really beyond my reach.

I promise, I will buckle down–eventually 😉

Hawaiian Prelude

I have been given the opportunity to stay in Hawaii for 5 weeks. I will be in Kona, tanning, hiking, enjoying the sounds and sights of island life–and of course scouting out some great coffee.

I have always enjoyed Hawaiian coffee and coffee shops, Kona coffee is among my favorites. I cannot wait to enjoy it, in its home. Wish me the best of luck–and get ready for some Hawaiian recommendations!
