A Cup Collection

In my last apartment, my last permanent residence, I had about 15-20 mugs. I had a few solid colors, a few designs, and a few with inscriptions–varying from funny to inspiring. I lived in a decent sized apartment, but I had started to look at the collection and wonder when I would have enough.

I don’t like clutter, I don’t want to take up too much space, and I want to be practical; I only drink out of one mug so really one could technically be enough, a reasonable person might say two or three to take into account that one may break or one may be in the dishwasher. Okay. I can live with 2-3 mugs.

At this point, far below an alarming number–in my opinion–I had already given credence to the idea that I had a collection, and that I may be on my way to, or already have, a sizable collection.

This was a year ago, before all my travels, before I sold or gave away most of my stuff, and put the rest in storage. This was before I reduced my collection in order to embark on a sort of gap year.

Nowadays, I actually miss my wall of hanging mugs, I miss the variety, I miss having options; at the same time, I know that giving them up and/or putting them away was best. Sometimes less is truly more. We can live with less.

Furthermore, after reading about Mesude Islkll, I realize that my 15-20 mugs was not that much. I’m not a collector. I had a reasonable amount of mugs for my love, my work, and my coffee.

Who’s Mesude Islkll? A woman who has collected 3,000+ coffee cups. She started 12 years ago, and they’re beautiful, some are even antiques. Each one holds a special memory for her. It is her passion and it shows.

I loved my mugs and it was hard to let go. I do love adding another mug to my collection–and look forward to building a new collection. However, I definitely don’t have the time, space, or money to amass a collection like Islkll. And maybe what I’ve learned and discovered is the sweet spot, somewhere between my original 15-20, and her 3,000+  sounds like a decent figure for a cup collection 😉😂

I just have to figure out how much is appropriate . . . 25? 50? What do you think?

While I drink . . .

While I drink my coffee–whether it is morning, noon, or night, I . . .

  • daydream
  • consider my day
  • get ready for the day
  • read
  • get ready for the afternoon
  • write
  • get ready for the night
  • watch tv
  • listen to the radio
  • walk
  • clean
  • cook
  • work
  • do nothing
  • say nothing
  • think of nothing

Sometimes it’s a cup meant for awakening. It’s a time to get rejuvenated or ready for something. Other times, it’s my downtime, a relaxing and warm experience. It’s not a single reason to drink, and therefore not a single experience.

As coffee has so many purposes and so much potential, it allows for much to accompany it.

. . . And what do you do while you drink?

Kona, Hawaii, USA: Daylight Mind Coffee Company

Daylight Mind Coffee Company–two locations:

  • Kailua-Kona
  • Waikoloa

Let me state flatly and unequivocally: Kailua-Kona is better.

If you can only go to one location in Kona, I vote Kailua-Kona.

Why? The Kailua-Kona location rests right on the beach. The added smells, sounds, and feels of the ocean waves crashing makes everything about Daylight better. The Waikoloa location is in Queens Marketplace, a nice shopping center but nothing magical–it’s not the ocean.

The menu is the same. I had better service in Kailua-Kona each time. I had quality internet in both locations. Kailua-Kona was a larger venue with more seating, and thus more varied types of seating.

Kailua-Kona is also next to a farmers market, the former royal summer residence, plenty of tourists shops, and quite a few hotels. It just feels more accessible, and I feel there is more to do and experience as a visitor in this part of town.

I had breakfast, iced coffee, house coffee, and coffee to-go at the Kailua-Kona location. I ordered coffee and seated myself. I went to the restaurant to experience the service and food. I stayed for approximately 15 minutes on one visit, on another visit I stayed for a couple of hours. I went weekdays and weekends, mornings and afternoons. I visited on multiple occasions and each time I was thoroughly impressed by every bit of this place.

At the Wakioloa location, I went just twice–once for breakfast and once just for coffee.

At either Daylight, the coffee was good, not my favorite in all of Kailua-Kona, but I still loved it, specifically the Kailua-Kona venue, for everything it paired and added to the coffee experience. So, this is an unusual recommendation, as I’m recommending it not based on having the best coffee per se, but rather on the feeling and ambiance created while drinking your coffee.

So, if you’re in Kona, try Daylight, try both locations, it’s good for coffee, breakfast, and maybe a little downtime before you go shopping, or back to the beach.

What is coffee?

Okay we’re entering double-digit responses on this one . . . by now I’m sure you’re well aware of my desire to answer this question from multiple angles.

So, “What is coffee?”

Well, *supposedly*, from a variety of conversations, articles, news stories, etc.

Coffee is . . .

  • an aphrodisiac (saucy!)
  • addictive (well, did you see the first point?)
  • a diuretic (that might be a problem . . .)
  • stimulating your bowels (well, this is a problem, and how can it do that and be an aphrodisiac? 🤔)
  • a carcinogenic ( . . . and this is what happens with the internet, I went from being sexy to dying)

What is coffee?

My ninth attempt to answer “What is coffee?”

Coffee is  . . .

  • healthy
  • beneficial
  • full of nutrients
  • a good source of caffeine
  • part of a balanced diet
  • loaded with antioxidants

**I’m neither a nutritionist nor a medical provider of any sort, but trust me–coffee has a lot going for it . . .

Milan, Lombardy, Italy: Starbucks

Okay, hear me out, because I know what you’re thinking: Starbucks in Italy? She’s crazy!

I will admit that there is some level of insanity in me, though that is mostly contained in things outside of coffee recommendations (think resigning from my job before finding my next job, traveling solo, buying a one-way ticket to another country without a firm return or a destination beyond the initial destination–this is lunacy).

Therefore, refrain from instant dismissal, stick with the shock, and just read:

There are certain things you have to see in a city–the Eiffel Tower in Paris or the Strip in Las Vegas. Their fame is legendary, and well-established.

Starbucks is everywhere. Their fame is legendary and well-established. Equally legendary and well-established: coffee in Italy. So, what happens when you put these two iconic brands, tastes, and cultures together? Magic. And this is why I recommend going, wholeheartedly, to the Starbucks Reserve in Milan.

Milan is an incredible city, rich with history, architecture, and, most notably, fashion. Milan is one of the busiest and most crowded tourist destinations on the planet. I marveled at every turn.

The Duomo took my breath away. Sempione Park was lush, spacious, and beautiful. The Da Vinci Museum was one of the most interactive, informative, and most fun museums I have ever patroned. Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II was filled with a ton of people, and some of the most expensive, lucrative fashion designers in the world.

Incredible. All of it.

That’s not all though. On a photo shoot and tour, I was reminded that the first Starbucks, and the only Starbucks at this time, to enter the borders of Italy was standing in Milan. I remembered hearing about it on the news, at home in the US, and laughing. I remembered Italians making fun and practically mocking the idea. I asked about its welcome and business–it had been a hit! The coffee, the food, the decor, the concept, had all been well-received.

Since it is the first Starbucks in Italy. Since it is the only Starbucks in Italy. Since it received great reviews among locals and tourists, I had to check it out.

The place is massive, and opulent. It’s not a regular coffee shop but a reserve. There’s an upstairs area for coffee and small pastries. The main floor has two sections to order coffee and food–food menus differ on each side. The main floor is also home to a roastery. There are places to buy beans, speak to experts, and purchase all kinds of coffee-related items. There is outdoor seating on the front patio–it’s located in Piazza Cordusio so lots of traffic and people to view on said patio.

Unlike most other locales in Italy, it’s incredibly spacious–there’s plenty of seating to take that much-needed extended break. Food options are plentiful. Wifi is available, and due to food, space, and Wifi, working individuals are a regular sight.

Now, I realize there are a few select reserves in the world that mimic much of what I saw, tasted, and enjoyed in Milan. However, the spectacle is rare and beautiful; moreover, it’s the first of its kind in Milan and truly novel in the whole of Italy.

So, with all of that, I have to say: if you’re ever in Milan, in between all your shopping and sight-seeing, make sure to check out Starbucks Reserve. It’s the only one in Italy. The drinks and food are delicious. The decor is spectacular. The ambiance is vibrant.

Starbucks in Milan? Yes please!

Burger King Coffee

It’s not gourmet.

It’s not going to get approval from your friendly neighborhood coffee snob.

I doubt it will be on any coffee connoisseur’s list of top picks.

Nevertheless, I feel compelled to let you know that for $5 a month, you can get coffee, each and every day for a month–at Burger King.

While my stomach is churning as I write this post, I actually hate Burger King–ate there once in high school and then never again–I must let you know about this deal . . . you just let me know how it goes though 😉
