bird-friendly (coffee):

  • coffee grown/produced without the destruction or clearing of natural habitats (often rainforests)
    • coffee produced in places where shade, trees, are protected and allowed to grow alongside the coffee that will eventually will be harvested
      • the protected/preserved trees provide natural shade, home, and food for many animals, particularly migratory birds
  • sometimes labeled “Rainforest Alliance”, or “shade-grown” — always double-check though, look for a seal (Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center of the National Zoo)
    • common, well-known brands that have bird-friendly certification: Peet’s Coffee, Java Planet
